Voice-to-text apps turn speech into text, either for dictating into any app or for transcribing recordings. Many run OpenAI's Whisper or similar models locally, so audio never leaves the Mac and transcription works offline. Apple silicon makes local transcription fast enough for daily use.
Buzz transcribes and translates audio files on your machine. VoiceInk and Whispering focus on dictation: press a shortcut, speak, and the text is typed into the current app. Check whether an app runs models locally or sends audio to a cloud API, which models it supports, and whether advanced features need a paid license. Most entries here are open source.
